Planted: Music

Music has a way of affecting us in different ways. A song can tell a story. Sometimes a song grabs you and plunges itself into your heart.

Nights in White Satin did that for me. I can't remember at what point during the creative process of writing Planted I heard this song, but when I did, it emphasized so many emotions I was feeling about the characters and their story. Justin Hayward's lyrics, along with a magical delivery, haunted me, and brought me closer to the scenes I was creating. And, there's a flute! I love the flute!

Justin Hayward has said that he wrote the song at a very emotional time in his life. As one relationship was ending and another beginning, he was inspired by a set of white satin sheets.

One of the most powerful lines in the song is, "Just what you want to be, you will be in the end." My characters, Luke and Lily realize through the story that they are in charge of their own destiny. Even though they are very different, and perhaps shouldn't be together, they fall in love. Their struggle is to not miss the beauty in life anymore, and their goal is to fight for acceptance while they strengthen their growing bond.

A little bit of Romeo and Juliet... but hopefully no suicide!

Nights in white satin, never reaching the end,

Letters I've written, never meaning to send.

Beauty I'd always missed with these eyes before.
Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore.

'Cos I love you, yes I love you, oh how I love you.

Gazing at people, some hand in hand,

Just what I'm going through they can't understand.
Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend,
Just what you want to be, you will be in the end.

And I love you, yes I love you,

Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.

Nights in white satin, never reaching the end,

Letters I've written, never meaning to send.
Beauty I've always missed, with these eyes before.
Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore.

'Cos I love you, yes I love you,

Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.
'Cos I love you, yes I love you,
Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.
